Well that went by fast!
So, I see that my last post on this blog was in 2006. 2006!! I thought of this blog when a friend recently asked about experiences that I've had with transracial adoption and I've been thinking a little about coming back to writing, although it will likely be very occasionally. Plus, I'm doing something on WordPress for work and thought of this blog again.
Anyway....

Parenting is a marathon, not a sprint. I see our job as his parents as helping him to fulfill his potential. We've had lots of people helping Jacob to do this, including:
- Becky, Faith, and Rebecca, occupational therapists to help with his fine motor skill issues, which are now almost gone
- Becky and Faith, who helped with social-emotional issues that kept the terrible twos around until he was about five
- An occupational therapist who did vision therapy with him to help with vision issues (now cured)
- Awesome teachers at his excellent school, including Rachel, Sharon, GT, and Regan to help him fulfill his academic potential
- His orthodontist and soon-to-be speech language pathologist to help with his mouth issues (who knew there could be so many??), which include a cross bite, narrow palate, being tongue-tied and upper-lip tied, and he will likely need to have tooth extractions later. As I say to people, we're sending his orthodontist and his entire family to Fiji, First Class. It's a multi-year process and we're just in phase 1
Here are issues that are now gone:
- Social-emotional issues as a toddler
- Proprioception issues
- Loud sound issues
- Vision issues
- Fine motor skill issues
- Lack of focus in school
If anyone tells you that different kinds of therapy don't work or help, they are dead wrong. We've seen it do miracles for Jacob. I keep wondering what other issues could there possibly be that we need to throw therapists and money at?? BUT, it's all worth it because without them he would definitely be at a disadvantage. As it is he is now a great kid who works super hard in his class and is a nice kid most of the time, except when he's not. ;-)
Here are his greatest accomplishments at the tender age of seven:
- He's one of the fastest 7 year-olds in Seattle, as determined by track meets
- He's a double gold medal winner at an international karate tournament (Nov 2012)
- He went from being pretty far behind in school due to vision issues and focus issues to just being a little bit behind. He got mostly caught up in just a few months time.
- He has incredible persistence. It will look like he's going to give up when he gets frustrated by homework, for example, but he'll come back to it once he's had a good cry on the sofa.
Overall, he's a pretty awesome kid with a huge amount of potential!
